Taxis vs Rental Cars in Singapore
It would surprise most people that there are now more rental cars on the road than taxis. According to LTA statistics, there are now 30,433 rental cars registered in January 2016 vs 28,258 taxis registered in January 2016. In January 2015, there were only 19,060 rental cars vs 28,515 taxis.
December 2015 saw the first time that rental cars exceeded taxis in Singapore! Interestingly, the total number of cars dropped from 600,176 in 2014 to 573,793 in 2015.
Accordingly more than 5% of all cars on Singapore roads are now rental cars.
In 2015, the total number of taxi driver’s vocational licence issued by the LTA was 99,337. For a single shift taxi driver, the average across 2015 for number of trips per day was at 19.6 trips with 10.4 km average mileage per trip. There are no statistics on 2015 taxi trips yet, but in 2014 there was an average of 1.02m taxi trips a day. (This compares with 2.762m MRT trips on average a day)
