“In this reduced transaction volume of COVID and circuit breaker, ride-hailing transaction volumes may have dropped by up to 80%, but Ryde’s transaction volumes have increased by 100%!” This actually means that Ryde currently may have more than 10% market share of the total ride-hailing volume in Singapore.
Terence started by highlighting Ryde’s unique system: “We broadcast to the nearest driver, so that no one has an unfair advantage. There is no queue per se. There is no bias allocation of jobs to "favored" partners. Jobs are slightly cheaper, but Ryde takes lower commission which can be as low as 0% for RydeX and 10% for RydeFlash.”
In a COVID situation, Ryde’s broadcast system is arguably appealing to drivers. When there are a lot of jobs and there are assignments, all is fine. In contrast, when demand drops significantly, assignment leaves out a lot of drivers who are outside of the favored group. Terence reiterated “We believe in building a transparent and fairer system for drivers”.
Terence notes that under Ryde’s model, Drivers are free to choose who they drive for, without being tied to any incentive system and this allows more flexibility for Drivers to drive stress-free. “Drive for the fares and not for incentives” he says.
In COVID, Ryde says they “still have strong demand from essential workers”. A lot of riders are a little more price conscious and want to find a slightly cheaper cost of point-to-point transport. Ryde reminds McQueen Rentals that it is ok to have prices slightly cheaper because Ryde’s commissions are also lower. The other advantage of having cheaper prices is that it increases repeat demand from riders. This is especially important in a down market; and helps Ryde’s business to increase.
Terence explained that one of the reasons ride-hailing volume has been down so significantly is that Taxis and other ride-hailing companies are more dependent on tourists. There used to be 1.8 mil tourists a month in Singapore, he says; and the #1 destination for ride-hailing is Changi Airport. Other companies such as Grab and Go-Jek are also regional, so SE Asian tourists use them. In contrast, Ryde’s business is 99% local and has been least affected.
One of the biggest factors leading to Ryde’s recent success is that Ryde responds faster because it is nimble and is a pure platform play. Ryde has always operated on a virtual basis. Ryde is completely digital: “we have no physical assets, no driver centers; all our support, clarification is digital.” This was opportune when the circuit breaker hit. Ryde had zero problems in its operations and operated 100% as per normal. In fact, Ryde’s employees were completely able to work from home.
Ryde comments that Drivers will have to “re-study the market”. Drivers will have to think more flexibly: the aftermath of COVID will see changes in demand patterns going forward. More people will work from home, and work hours will be staggered. CBD surges will not be as high as before. Ryde also suggests that perhaps demand will resurface elsewhere with more people working from home – e.g. industrial areas / hospitals / schools / neighborhoods. In addition, Ryde says that Drivers will increasingly have to consider taking delivery jobs such as RydeSEND.
Finally, Terence was also asked how Ryde will grow going forward? He explained that Ryde will concentrate on mobility and focus on ride-hailing. “We will focus on ride-hailing and other mobility related services such as disposals, pets and deliveries.”

Your car seat cushion, it has accompanied you through long driving days keeping your bottom comfortable. But when you are returning your car, you have forgotten about it, only to remember your cushion the next time you drive.
ERP and Car parks, all paid using your cash card. You usually just leave it in there and forget about it, unless there is not enough funds. Hires tend to forget about the cash card only to come back much later to claim it back.
GPS, something we all use nowadays, gone were the days where we memorized road. The phone holder holds your phone so that you can see the GPS throughout your journey, but since it looks like it is part of the car, it is easy to forget about it.
Keeping your shoulder comfortable on long ride, yet another companion on your long trips. Same reason as above, as it looks like it's part of the car, it is usually forgotten. It will eventually become the companion of the next hire.
You can hook this, you can hook that. The hooks that help you carry groceries and bags that you buy or bring along on your journeys. Since it is cheap, small, and usually out of sight, it is usually the most forgotten item.
So next time you return a car, don't forget to check if you are leaving any of this behind!
]]>Starting things off here is a Flowchart, answer the questions and you will have a quick answer on which one you should rent!
If you are still unsure or want more information to help you decide which type of car to rent. Here is the Pros and Cons of each type.
]]>
Your age and driving experience might affect if a rental company can rent to you, might even affect the price.
Usually rental companies will ask you for your age and driving experience, if not you should let them know just in case if the following applies to you;
This is so that you will not have a wasted trip or any sudden extra expenses.
If your car is involved in an accident or is damaged, just imagining the amount you have to pay will give most nightmares. However, there is where Insurance excess comes in, it limits how much you will have to pay in case of such unfortunate events.
That is why you should always make sure that your rental companies have insurance excess.
Another level is Collision and Damage Wavier (CDW), where you top up a bit of cash to your rental to reduce your insurance excess but a huge amount. Something you might want to consider if you are renting long term to reduce some risk over time.
Not all rental companies would offer the top 2 option, however we would recommend that you at least find a company that has insurance excess as it is never worth taking the risk.
Let's be honest here, would you rent a expensive item to someone you barely met without some kind of assurance like deposit? Of course not, that is why most rental companies would ask for deposits of varying amount just in case. Thus you should always ask the rental company how much is the deposit before heading down to not get shocked by it.
Lets talk about hidden charges shall we? It is no secret that there is some "hidden charges" whether intentional or not, so if it is not stated don't presume it is not there and ask about it.
This are some charges you should ask if it is already inclusive of the price;
So always check with your rental company the above points before going down so that you won't get shocked.
When you get the keys to your car, make sure that you do not rush and drive off with the car immediately. You may ask; "why not? The car is now mine until the end of the rental term right?"
Well you are not wrong in thinking that but do remember you have to return the car and your deposit still with the rental company.
So when you receive the car even if it is new make sure to take note of every small scratch and dents, then make sure your rental company notes them down so you will not be charged when you return the car.
You might be surprised at how much a dent can cost you.
Different companies will have different policies and if you do not follow them you might not get your deposit back. So always check the return policy of your rental companies, so that you will not violate them and incur more extra charges.
Here are some of the points that you should take note of;
You can never be too careful when you are renting a car, make sure you remember this 5 points if you are going to be renting a car and you will be ensured a smoother, less shocking process of renting your car!

There are 4 changes that are being made to GoJek's incentive, namely the following;
With the new point system of Gojek, there is a few points that stands out;
To summaries the changes, drivers who drive in the city area, during the peak hour, taking longer and harder trip, will be rewarded with more points then previously. Making obtaining point slightly easier then previously.
Then I am sure you are wondering, "What do Gojek mean by "City Center?". The answer to that question is here; (The highlighted area is the City Center.)
Now what can this points do for you? Well first off there is the Daily point payouts!
So Gojek advertise that you can earn an additional $200 a day if you hit 100 points a day. So we did some calculation on how many rides and hours you have to spend in a day to earn that incentive in the best case scenario.
We will be making an assumption that all your rides
Morning Peak hours (4 hours): 9 Rides = 54 points
Afternoon peak hours (3 hours): 7 rides = 28 points
Total Peak hours points = 82 points
So to earn your remain 18 points, you will need to take 9 additional rides outside peak hours.
Thus to hit 100 points on a weekday you will need (minimum);
Morning Peak hours (4 hours): 9 Rides = 54 points
Afternoon peak hours (4.2 hours): 10 rides = 45 points
Total Peak hours points = 101 points
Thus to hit 100 points on a Friday you will need (minimum);
During Peak hours (10.5 hours) : 25 rides = 100 points
Even with the best case scenario it will take 8 to 10 hours everyday to hit the top tier incentive, so if we include waits for bookings, longer rides, traffic jams and other condition, It become nearly impossible to hit the highest and even the second highest tier rewards consistently everyday.
Unless your stars aligns and you are lucky if not you will have drive for nearly half a day. Thus we will recommend just aiming for the tier 3 rewards which is a slightly more realistic daily goal and it will be less taxing on your health.
On the bright side, this particular incentive you earn will not be subjected to the 20% Service charge for Gojek so if you earn it you can bring the full sum home.
Gojek has raised their criteria for drivers to qualify for the MWEs, now drivers will have to achieve a minimum weekly performance average of 90% (previously 80%).to qualify.
However if you qualify for it the following is the payout;
This particular incentive will benefits drivers who keep getting low value rides and is earning very little from the rides. Ensuring that you will earn enough.
The amount you can get from this is after MWE - Trip after service charge - Incentives.
So we did some math, What is the maximum extra cash you can earn from this. With the criteria being;
250 points = 42 Trips (8-9 trips a day during morning peak)
Money earn from trip = 42 x 8 = $336
So you will get an extra of $581.20 (850 - (336 -20%))
350 points = 59 Trips (12 trips a day during morning peak)
Money earn from trip = 59 x 8 = $472
So you will get an extra of $872.40 (1250 - (472-20%))
500 points = 84 Trips (16-17 trips a day during morning peak)
Money earn from trip = 84 x 8 = $672
So you will get an extra of $1312.40 ($1850- (672 -20%)).
This is a very good system to fall back on, however please do note the above estimates are the "best case scenario" and is usually you will not hit it as there will be other incentive and you may have to take more rides off peak hours to actually hit the numbers.
However, this means that as long as you take enough rides Gojek will try to help you make up for the lost as much as they can. but it is best not to rely on this to earn in case they change it in the future.
So if you rent from Gofleet's partners you will be able to qualify for this on top of all your other incetive.
This incentives gives you extra cash base on your fares and weekly trips count, so basically the more GoJek rides you complete the more incentives you will get.
So the best incentive is 10% of your total fare. but you need to complete 160 trips a week which means a min of 22-23 trips a day, which means non stop driving for about 10 hours a day (provided you get 1 trip after another).
This incentive is good apart from the fact that Gojek can just remove the additional incentive with at most 1 week notice, and currently the GoJek user base is not that much.
You should be able to hit 6.5% relatively easily compare to the 10% as you only need to take 18 rides a day, which is about 7.5 to 8 hours a day.
And last but not least Gojek's GoalBetter qualification has been changed for this quarter and the above is how you can qualify for the next quarter.
The GoalBetter benefit has not change and only a selected few drivers are invited to join this program. If you are invited to enjoy this benefit you will be notified by Gojek.
Overall Gojek's new top rewards looks very attractive, however to achieve them you might have to work 7 days a week and 9-10 hours each day. Which is achievable in the short term however not sustainable in the long term.
So if you are looking for short term profit, we will recommend for you to aim for the top reward and plan your time strategically. However if you are going to be driving for long term we would suggest you aim for a slightly lower tier reward to make sure you won't burn out and have time for other things in your life.

We have taken into consideration some of the factors that you may be concern with if you want to take a break, like free parking, location and more.
If you are driving in the west side of Singapore and you want take a break, Where should you go? The answer is West Coast Park of course!
First and most importantly their Car park 2 and 3 have free parking, this is to ensure that you won't incur any extra charges as you are enjoying your well deserve break.(Source)
West Coast park is usually a relatively quiet place perfect for a short nap in your car with sun shade to block out any excess light, allowing you to rest up and prepare to drive again.
There are also places to grab a quick bite if you are hungry, especially since there is a MacDonald there that is opened 24/7. So no matter the time of the day, you will definitely be able to grab a bite.
If instead of being in the west, you are in the east side of Singapore. You can always head down to IKEA Tampines.
Ikea Tampines also has free parking during their opening hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. (source)
You may ask but why IKEA? Well apart from being able to window shop through their place in comfort, they also have a restaurant that serves their famous meatballs. If you have never tried them before, we highly recommend to give it a try the next time you are nearby.
Aperia mall only has free parking on 6.30 p.m. to 9.59 p.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. to 8.59 a.m. on weekends and public holidays. (source)
The reason why we recommend this place is that it is a stone throw away from the CBD area, it's a shopping mall where you can relax and get a quick meal in. This is for drivers who just need a quick break before and after the peak hour rush.
Just like the rest of the entries in this list Mount Faber park also comes with free parking! (source)
If you are in the south side of Singapore, Mount Faber park is a good spot to take a break. Since there is very little human traffic there, there will be little noise and disturbances thus a very suitable place to take a nap and recharge.
Once you are refreshed, you just have to head down south a bit and you will be at HabourFront where you can take more passengers!
Similar to the previous entry, Labrader Nature Reserve has free parking all day long! (source)
Labrader Nature Reserve has the same advantages of the previous spot plus one of the car park is facing the sea, so you can relax and enjoy some zen meditation.

If you own a car you must keep track of your road tax, car insurance, seasonal parking, servicing, maintenance, and fuel consumption all year round. So many things to keep track of just so you can drive a car in Singapore.
Whereas if you rent a car, you just pay for the rental, parking and the fuel consumed. Cutting your responsibility by half while letting your rental company handle the rest!
If you own a car you will have to pay for it all year round regardless if you are using it or not. It is just a recurring expense that you cannot stop once you started it. And let’s not forget that cars are one of the fastest depreciating products, where just driving it will cause it to lose value exponentially.
Compared to if you rent a car, you only pay for the days you rent and not have to worry about years on years of commitment to paying for the car.
Purchasing a car means that you will be stuck with that car for the next few years, unless you strike the lottery and decide to upgrade your car.
If you were renting cars instead, you can always rent a new car every time and change it just like changing clothes.
At the moment of writing this article both Grab and Gojek has incentive for their drivers who rent from their fleet partners. For Grab there is GrabRental Shield and for Gojek there is GoFleet. They give 24% – 30% Caltex Fuel discount and 150$ rental rebates respectively.
You will only have access to this incentive if you rented cars from their partners to drive for them. This covers some of your cost of driving and make it even cheaper to drive.
Last but not least, you need a huge initial amount to purchase a car in Singapore, you have to pay for COE, VES, ARF, OMV, registration fee and others. If the words do not bring you a headache the amount most certainly will, Singapore is after all one of the most expensive countries to own a car.
In the case of renting a car, there is not much of an initial cost just maybe an advance payment for the rental period and a deposit, which is but a fraction of what you have to pay to buy a car.
In conclusion owning a car for personal use or for commercial use is very expensive and a hassle in Singapore. It would be more cost effective to rent cars for usage unless you are willing to commit at least years to fund your car.
So Why not check out our Fleet , all ready for you to rent and drive off!
]]>If you are driving for Grab, then you are either driving your own car or renting one. If you are the later of the two, then you would have been aware that there are programs in place to reward you if you rented from either GrabRental or Grab Fleet Partners. So, for this post today we will be exploring the benefit you can get from Grab by renting from a Grab Fleet Partner.
Starting on 30 September 2019, GrabRentals Loyalty Rental Rebate program has officially ended, along with the incentives that comes along with it. The Rental Rebate program previously gave an additional 6-8% extra on top of the fare received depending on your Emerald Circle level. This program only rewards the drivers who are driving more and have higher ratings.
Source : Grab webpage
However, when one door closes another open, the GrabRental Shield brings with it not 1, not 2, but 3 different benefits for both GrabRental and Fleet Partners! The most significant difference from the previous program is the requirement to access the benefits has been lowered and almost everyone can have access to the benefits.
The benefit enjoyed by GrabRental and Fleet Partner’s Hirers are different and as mention previously, we will be exploring the Fleet Partner’s benefits
First of the three benefit that you will be enjoying would be discounts at Caltex when you pump your fuel! However, the benefits ranges from 24% to 30% depending on your Emerald Circle tier level.
If you are Emerald or Ruby tiers, you will get a 24% discount and if you re-fuel over 500L in a month you will be eligible to receive an additional 20$ cash back! So, if you belong to this group, keep track of your re-fueling to get that additional cash back.
If you are in Sapphire and Diamond tiers, you will get a whole 30% discount! A whooping 6% additional discount worth of savings.
RentalShield Auto Excess Cover is the second of the three benefits, this gives you auto excess cover of up to 1,500$ per claim. However, there are a few criteria that must be met first.
In other words, you will automatically have this benefit if you are not in trouble with Grab. To ensure that you can get the claim, you must pay your excess first and claim from Chubb as soon as possible after the occurrence of the incident.
This will take a load of you as a driver in the unfortunate case of an accident.
Have you ever wanted to take a medical leave as a Grab driver, but you worry about the rental and the potential profit lost and decide against it? Well now with this last benefit, you can recover some of your rental. How it will cover for you will depend on your emerald circle tier as shown below:
Emerald | Ruby | Sapphire | Diamond | |
Medical Leave (ML)(1) |

This means that if due to some unfortunate event or sickness that cause you to be unable to drive for a period. Your rental of the car is covered up to 60$ starting from 4th - 6th day of your medical leave and from the 2nd day of your hospital leave.
With this you can have a ease of mind that even if you are sick, you will not be paying for your rental to sit in the carpark and collect dust.
Source: Grab Webpage
All these new benefits care more for the welfare of the driver and protects the driver to a certain extend if anything unexpected happens. Compared to the previous program that benefits the hard-working drivers, this program benefits all drivers and the more hard-working drivers getting slightly better benefits.
So, in conclusion, instead of instant monetary gain for working hard as a Rental Grab driver, you will get coverage benefits and discounts that increases as you become more hard working. This might discourage some of the more hard-working drivers but at the same time it encourages more casual drivers to drive for grab as they are cover for more instants.

Not sure where to go? Do not worry as we have done the research so you do not have to!
The Singapore Zoo and Jurong Bird Park is relatively accessible through public transport, however driving in is way faster and less hassle.
What is more in the month of October 2019. Both parks are having a promotion where kids (3 - 12 Years old) can enter for free with each paying adult. (Only available to locals and not available during public holiday)
So load up your car with portable fans and mosquito repellent, and venture through both parks easily in the same day!

2. Sentosa
Sentosa, an island of fun south of our island home but what is so special about it during the month of October?
The Sentosa Merlion will be closed on 21st October 2019, so before it closes why not head on down to make some memories? (Especially if you are a local as your ticket will be at half price.)

3. Chalets
Home away from home. Staying in a place away from the hustle and bustle of city life, enjoying the peace and quiet of chalets. However I bet you might be thinking something along the lines of “but in a chalet we stay in it and do not really need a car now do we?”
Well my readers, just imagine this for a moment… You need to bring your essentials, game consoles, and change of clothes imagine having to bring all this on public transport or attempt to squeeze it all in someone else’s car, or walking a long distance in the hot scorching sun just to grab a bite or drink.
Lets not forget that most chalets are perfect for a late night drive around as they are mostly located in areas with little to no traffic at night!
4. Malaysia
If you find Singapore too small, you can always drive you and your family to our neighbor Malaysia. There is no shortage of shopping malls in Johor Bahru (JB), and with the current currency exchange rate, going shopping in JB is relatively cheaper.
We also found out that on certain dates in October at the R&F Mall in JB there is a bubble tea challenge, where you stand a chance to win a 1 year supply of bubble tea. Check out their link!

SINGAPORE — A day before it was due to roll out a new policy for riders who cancel their bookings, ride-hailing firm Grab has delayed the move by two weeks to allow passengers “sufficient time” to adjust.
The move, originally set for Monday (March 11), will subject users to a S$4 fee if they cancel a ride more than five minutes after they are matched to a driver.
It will kick in on March 25 instead, the company announced on Sunday morning in a message to customers.
Users will also be charged the fee if a driver waits for more than five minutes at the pick-up point and cancels the ride.
In response to TODAY’s queries, a Grab spokesperson said the firm did not delay the roll-out because of the public backlash.
Rather, it noticed some confusion among riders about the new policy, and wanted to explain it better and give them more time before it kicks in.
For instance, Grab reiterated that passengers would not be charged for cancelling on a vehicle that is taking much longer to arrive at the pick-up point than indicated.
“Just as we are able to show you your driver’s current location, we have safeguards in place to detect if the driver’s not moving towards you,” Grab said in its announcement on Sunday.
The new policy will override the one today, in which a passenger receives a S$5 penalty after his third cancellation in seven days.
Grab said the new policy would allow more flexibility for passengers and ensure it remains fair to its drivers.
Passengers using its car-pooling service GrabShare will face stricter cancellation rules and have to fork out S$4 if they cancel after three minutes.
They will also be charged if drivers cancel their GrabShare ride after waiting for more than three minutes.
Drivers will receive the full cancellation fee, which will be deducted from users’ GrabPay electronic wallets, or credit or debit cards. Passengers using cash will have the fee added automatically to the fare of their next ride and the driver will be told to collect the fee on Grab’s behalf.
Drivers had told TODAY that the change was long overdue, with one saying that it would lead to fewer users booking rides on different ride-hailing applications and failing to cancel those that they no longer needed.
By
